Communicating the law to your workforce, customers and visitors
Your challenge from day 1 will be to implement the smoking ban. You are required to display signs to promote and enforce the law. Some signs are mandatory (to be specified shortly). some signs publish details of "on the spot fines" (to be specified shortly). some are
best practice and
smoking policy signs which will help you communicate your "no smoking policy" to your workforce and customers. Other high visibility items such as no smoking
A-Boards assist in the initial implementation of the ban and create awareness for both visitors and regular users of the building.
How to ensure you don't fall foul of a fine
Smoke detectors can be installed in and around your premises to help detect any illegal smoking. Signs can be displayed to warn that smoke detectors are in operation.
Congregating in foyers and reception areas
You will have smokers congregating in areas around your building. Groups of people loitering around your reception area for example, may not be particularly inviting to visitors or portray the desired image of the company. Prevent people gathering outside your entranceways and reception areas by creating designated smoking areas. Use
signs to help communicate where your smokers can smoke, and introduce
cigarette litter bins and
smoking shelters to encourage people to use these areas.
How to deal with increased litter as a result of the ban
As smokers move outside, cigarette end litter becomes a problem. Also, discarded cigarettes can be a fire hazard if not extinguished properly. Display signs and provide
cigarette litter bins to encourage safe litter disposal.
Stainless steel bins do not deteriorate in poor weather conditions.
Wall-mounted or
post-mounted options are excellent for positioning at entrances.
Floor-mounted options provide bigger volume alternatives when used in designated smoking areas.
Keeping your smoking workforce motivated
The introduction of the ban in the summer is no coincidence... It will be more difficult for smokers to adapt in the cold, rain and snow of winter. By providing
shelters you will protect your smokers from the elements.
Outdoor heating can help to fight the cold and
seating can make them more comfortable. The use of
outdoor lighting will help to keep them safe during those dark winter days.
